The Hon. Commissioner for Education, Prof Uche Eze has charged members of the Enugu State School Based management committee (SBMC) to be committed in the discharge of their duties. He made this charge during a courtesy visit by the group in his office this week. He reminded them that the committee was a well recognized entity by the state government saddled with the responsibility of partnering with government in the management of schools.
Throwing more light on the policy establishing the SBMC, Prof. Uche Eze reiterated that members of the School Based Management Committee should be persons who have the interest of the school at heart as well as ensure that every child of school age should be in school. He also said the SBMC should also ensure wide target coverage in reaching out to stakeholders in their various communities and ensure protection of their community schools, enlighten the people to let them be informed of their roles in carrying out the measures necessary for the containment of COVID-19 in our schools.
The Hon. Commissioner for Education however frowned at the case where SBMC members see their duty as political whereby levies are imposed on school children for personal gain. This, according to him, is inappropriate.
Also in the address of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, she reminded the SBMC executives that its function is meant to go beyond that of former PTA in collaborating with the relevant stakeholders in the Education sector to improve the system of Education in the State.
In response, the Chairman Enugu State School Based Management Committee, Mr. Ukwueze Joseph thanked the Commissioner for his hospitality and promised that the committee will join hands with the state government and relevant stakeholders in the state to build up the education sector.
